Underground recorded a famous victory on Saturday with a 5-0 victory over rivals Cavaliers. The result means Underground have won the major league title with a game in hand.
It made no difference that Underground were missing influential play maker Andrew Dunn this week. The style of play Underground implemented relied a lot on the pass and move football which has epitomised their season.
Perhaps even more so on this occasion as without Dunn's flare and
ability to beat multiple defenders, passing play was required to get in behind
the Cavaliers defense.
From the outset Underground looked ominous as they began to dominate possession. It wasn't long before Undergrounds top goal scorer Sam Foster found the net. Strong passing play opened up Cavaliers on the break and a sweet thru ball from the left field by Joseph Cottle allowed Foster to finish a fine move by Underground.
Resolute Underground defense limited Cavaliers to long range
efforts on goal. This played into Cavaliers natural penchant for having
a go from distance but their erratic shots often proved wasteful. Their
best chance came when keeper Andy Speir found himself off his line and
an effort from distance went just wide of goal. A few minutes later an
acrobatic bicycle kick was attempted thanks to a pinpoint cross but that
shot went over the bar. The resolute Underground defense, and Cavaliers
lack of finishing ability compounded their frustration.
Underground never let up and they got their second goal when Foster made a break on the right. He put through an excellent low cross for Chris Chu to score his first goal of the season with a simple tap in finish. Foster scored his second not long after thanks to a pinpoint thru ball from Liam Badger. At half time Underground were looking fairly comfortable.
Liam Badger scored the first goal of the second half thanks to a perfect thru ball by Andrew Hewat. He broke free from the defense and had plenty of time top pick his spot, guiding the ball past the keeper. Controversy surrounded the goal as Charles Chu was alleged to be in an offside position despite not touching the ball. The referee saw no wrongdoing however and allowed the goal to stand.
Underground continued their dominance in the second half with a 5th goal by Anthony Cluley. It was the left wingers first goal of the season and having received a thru ball from Charles Chu he was able to slot home the final goal of the match.
Cavaliers never really had control of the game at any point and as the scoreline showed it was a one sided affair. They will be disappointing not to finish their last game of the season with a win as they have a bye in next weeks final round.
For Underground it was the final victory necessary to secure the Major League. They have had a fantastic season and their unbeaten run in the league now stretches to 12 games.
