Defensive frailties have continued to haunt Underground FC
after a second-half blitzkrieg saw Hillsborough ReUnited secure a
come-from-behind victory on Saturday.
Three second half goals allowed the visitors to overhaul a 0-1
halftime deficit and subsequently secure their third consecutive victory to
start life in the Major League on a high.
For Underground the 1-3 defeat has seen them concede eight goals
in just two matches while scoring just two.
They looked anything but defensively frail in the opening
half, with the likes of Tim de Beer anchoring the defensive line with some support
from brother Byron in his defensive midfield role.
But a raft of changes in the second half looked to have
altered the balance at the back as Hillsborough attackers tucked in.
In contrast, the visitors' defence started to gain confidence
as the match wore and, as a result, the Aaron Jacobsen-led side continued on
their unbeaten streak in the second division.
It was billed as a battle truly befitting a rivalry as both
sides eyed a precious win in the scheme of their seasons. For Hillsborough, a
victory would see them go one week shy of a complete year without tasting
defeat. For Underground, a win could have seen them bounce back from their
first-round defeat.
It looked as if the orange and black outfit would do enough
after securing a 1-0 half-time advantage thanks to a superb effort from Liam
Badger.
A through ball from Tim de Beer found a barnstorming Badger
tearing down the right midfield before he cut inside and put his effort past a
sprawling Hillsborough keeper to give his side a 1-0 lead.
De Beer and captain Ryan Hodgson shored up a defensive unit
that looked assured until half-time. Goalkeeper Andy Speir was vocal and
complemented what looked to be an inpenetrable back four.
And it remained inpenetrable until 10 minutes after
halftime, when Jay Govind capitalised on a defensive error close to
the goalmouth to ensure both sides were at level pegging after 55 minutes.
From there the class of the Hillsborough ReUnited side came
to the fore. As the defensive backline for Underground started to fade, the
fitness and finesse of the visitors' attack emerged victorious when Oli Wooding scored
their second goal with some 25 minutes to play.
Desperation then turned to disappointment for Underground as Wooding's second goal denied them a chance of
salvaging a draw.
